Benning Rd HazMat on #1

October 5, 2009 - At 2308 hours, E27 was alerted to a fuel spill at the Shell Gas Station in the 3300 block of Benning Road, NE. While in route, further information was obtained of smoke coming from a leaking tank, upgrading the Local to a HazMat Alarm. E27 confirmed a 1500 gallon hydrogen tank leaking to the rear of the station. A four block area was evacuated along with a Metro line shutdown due to the highly flammable gas involved with the possibility of an explosion. A Special Alarm was called for to assist. A representative of the gas station was called in to mitigate the problem and the gas was later shut off. Photos courtesy of dcfire.com.
