Deanwood News

June 10, 2009 - At 0552 hours, Units with the 2nd Battalion were alerted to the 5000 block of Just Street, NE for a house. E27 arrived on side Alpha of a two story duplex with smoke showing side Alpha. E27 entered the home, locating an adult female and Pvt Pumilia(Lineman) and Pvt Moose(Layout) quickly removed the subject with assistance from T17. EMS started CPR to the unconscious person and transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The fire was quickly knocked down with no further extension. The Box held with E27, E30 and T17 in 30 minutes.

June 4, 2009 - At 0956 hours, Units with the 4th Battalion were alerted to the 2200 block of Douglas Street, NE for a house. T15 arrived on side Alpha of a two story single family fully involved with extension to the Bravo and Delta exposures. As units began to attack the fire, power lines fell in the way hindering the operation. E27 arrived on the 3rd Alarm and reverse laid dual lines from E10 to assist with water supply. Two homes were gutted and the third home was saved. E27 operated for 30 minutes and then picked up.

June 2, 2009 - On Tuesday, members of the Deanwood Fire Department along with several other Companies and co-workers made the three hour trip to Southwest Virginia to lay a fellow brother to rest. The funeral for Captain Barchers was held at the New Providence Presbyterian Church in Raphine, Virginia. Rest in Peace brother.

Deanwood Welcomes New Members

May 29, 2009 - The Deanwood Fire Department would like to welcome Pvt AJ Pumilia who transferred from E8-4 to E27-4 and Prob Krystal Roberts from Recruit Class 358 to E27-1. We would also like to congratulate Pvt John Shymansky of E27-1 on getting his 90 day detail to RS1-4. Good luck guys and gal.

May 28, 2009 - It is with great regret that the Deanwood Fire Department announces the passing of Capt Charles Barchers. Capt Barchers passed away this morning at his home due to heart related complications. Capt Barchers was appointed to DCFD Recruit Class 267 on October 11, 1977 and was assigned to Truck Company 13 after graduating the academy. Capt Barchers retired from Truck Company 4 on April 26, 2008. Capt Barchers spent most of his time as the Captain at E27 after being promoted.

May 20, 2009 - At 1528 hours, Units with the 3rd Battalion were alerted to the 1100 block of 46th Street, SE for an explosion. T17 arrived on side Alpha of a two story single family with fire showing from the basement. E27 arrived on side Charlie and started knocking down the basement. T17 found severe damage to the structure and after finding a burned civilian outside of the house, E27 was pulled out and a defensive attack was initiated knocking down the remainder of the fire. One patient was transported to Medstar with burns to his face, back and arms. E27 supplied T7's ladder pipe and operated for over 3 hours with investigators.

May 15, 2009 - E27 attended the funeral for Pvt Timmy Russell's funeral. Brother Russell was laid to rest at the Fort Lincoln Cemetary in Brentwood, Maryland. Rest in Peace brother.

May 10, 2009 - It is with great regret that the Deanwood Fire Department announces the passing of active Pvt Timmy Russell. Pvt Russell was appointed to E27 on April 26, 1982. Pvt Russell was assigned to T12-2 at the time of his passing. 

May 7, 2009 - On Thursday, members of the Deanwood Fire Department attended the 22nd Annual Emerald Society Fish Tournament in Chesapeake Beach, Md. Members boarded the "Worm" out of Chesapeake Beach, Md. once again for a fun filled day of fishing. Although the team did not win the prize for the biggest fish, we all enjoyed the camaraderie. After fishing came to an end, members traveled to North Beach Volunteer Fire Department for some refreshments. Thanks to Pvt Bobo for getting the trip together.

May 3, 2009 - On Sunday, Platoon #2 updated the Wagon with the new patch. Recently the department went back to the old patch, although it received a couple changes. The patches are only being placed on new vehicles by the department. However, a set of new door seals were acquired and the old door seals were removed and replaced with the new ones.

May 1, 2009 - At 1138 hours, Units with the 2nd Battalion were alerted to the 1200 block of Simms Place, NE for a house fire. Units arrived on side Alpha of a two story single family with fire showing from the second floor, bringing E27 on the Working Fire Dispatch. E27 arrived, ran the 350' and assisted units with extinguishing a fire in the rear of the second floor and attic. E27 operated for 1 hour.
 

 
April 30, 2009 - At 1620 hours, E27 was alerted first due to the 4500 block of Eads Street, NE for a house. E27 found the fire to be in the 4500 block of Dix Street and arrived on side Alpha of a two story single family with smoke showing on the second floor from side Delta. E27 found a fire in a quadrant C bedroom, bathroom and hallway, knocking down the same. Ops 2 held the Box with one and two in 30 minutes.

April 26, 2009 - At 1428 hours, Units with the 2nd Battalion were alerted on a local to the 900 block of Division Avenue, NE for a smoke in the area. The Box was quickly filled as units arrived on side Alpha of a three story apartment building with fire showing from the second and third floor. E27 went to the third floor and were greeted by heavy fire conditions in several rooms. E27 knocked down all visible fire on the third floor. A second alarm and water supply strike team was called for due to water supply issues and 90 degree temperatures. All fire was knocked down in 20 minutes and E27 operated for 90 minutes.

April 21, 2009 - At 1108 hours, Units with the Special Ops BFC were alerted to the 200 block of 33rd Street, SE for a train derailment. E27 and T13 arrived in the area of Anacostia Park to find two cars of a CSX train overturned. E27 and T13 were placed in the recon group and investigated. The overturned train was carrying fuel/oil and spilled approximately one hundred gallons of product and had no passengers aboard. The product was contained by CSX personnel with no immediate danger. E27 operated for 90 minutes and the scene was turned over to CSX.

April 9, 2009 - At 2053 hours, Units with the 2nd Battalion were alerted to the 4700 block of Jay Street, NE for a building. E27 reported to side Alpha of a two story house with nothing showing. As E30 entered the alley, they discovered the fire to be around the corner, in the 800 block of 48th Street, NE and went on side Charlie of a one and a half story vacant single family with fire showing. E27 and E30 went to work knocking down a fire on the first floor with extension to the second floor. The Box was later held to two and two to assist investigators.

April 3, 2009 - At 2356 hours, Units with the 2nd Battalion were alerted to the 4600 block of Reed Terrace, SE for a house. E27 arrived on side Charlie of a two story single family with smoke showing from the second floor. E27 checked the basement, finding it clear, then backed up E30 on the second floor. No extension was found and the Box was  held to one and one to assist investigators.

April 1, 2009 - At 0248 hours, Units with the 2nd Battalion were alerted to Sheriff Road and Eastern Avenue, NE for a motor vehicle accident with subjects trapped. E27 arrived to find a car on its side with one trapped, stretching a safety line and stabilizing until the arrival of other units. RS3 arrived, completed stabilization and removed the roof to gain access to the patient. The patient was handed over to awaiting EMS and transported to a local trauma center for further evaluation. Two additional patients were transported to local hospitals for a check-up and one signed a release. Units cleared in 20 minutes. 

March 31, 2009 - At 2333 hours, Units with the 2nd Battalion were alerted to the 3200 block of E Street, SE for a house. E27 arrived on side Alpha of a one story single family with smoke showing. E27 found a fire in an closed in porch and quickly extinguished the same. No extension was found and the Box was held with one and one to assist investigators.

March 28, 2009 - At 1757 hours, Units with the 2nd Battalion were alerted to the 700 block of 31st Street, SE for an apartment. Units arrived on side Alpha of a two story duplex with smoke showing from the second floor. E27 arrived, picked up E19's supply and back them up with a bedroom off. T17 took care of opening up, finding no extension. With the primary and secondary negative, the Box was held with two and two for 30 minutes. One firefighter was injured and transported for a check-up.

March 25, 2009 - At 0645 hours, Units with the 2nd Battalion were alerted to the 4400 block of F Street, SE for a house. T17 arrived on side Alpha of two end of the row with fire showing on side Charlie of the first floor. E27 arrived and found a fire in the kitchen and quickly extinguished the same. No extension was found and the Box was held to one and one.

March 23, 2009 - At 0803 hours, Units with the 2nd Battalion were alerted to the 4200 block of Edson Place, NE for an apartment with one trapped. E27 arrived on side Alpha of a three story apartment building with smoke showing from the first floor. E27 found a fire in a bedroom, quickly knocked down the same as Lt Forrester quickly located the trapped subject. Pvt Waikart(Lineman) and Pvt Sanders(Layout) removed the victim and turned them over to awaiting EMS. The patient was transported to the burn center with second and third degree burns to 90% of his body. No extension was found and the Box was held to two and one to assist investigators.

March 22, 2009 - At 1543 hours, Units with the 2nd Battalion were alerted to the Unit block of Kenilworth Avenue, NE for smoke. E27 arrived on side Alpha of a four story apartment building with smoke showing from the third floor. E27 found a fire in the kitchen and quickly knocked down the same, finding no extension. Ops 2 held one and one in 20 minutes for to assist investigators.

March 20, 2009 - At 1914 hours, RS3 came across a T-bone style MVA at Ridge Road and 37th Street while going to get fuel. RS3 immediately called for the Rescue Assignment as they found one person trapped. E27 responded to the accident and stood-by with a charged line for safety and assisted with patient care. All four doors and the roof were removed from the car to free the patient. A total of four patients were taken to area hospitals for further evaluation.
